Australia, officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is a country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands. It has a total area of 7,688,287 km2 (2,968,464 sq mi), making it the sixth-largest country in the world and the largest in Oceania. Australia is the world's flattest and driest inhabited continent. Australia is a federal parliamentary democracy and constitution- al monarchycomprising six states and ten territories. Its popula- tion of almost 28 million is highly urbanised and heavily concen- trated on the eastern seaboard. Canberra is the nation's capital, while its most populous cities are Sydney and Melbourne, both with a population of more than five million. Australia's culture is diverse, and the country has one of the highest foreign-born populations in the world. It has a highly developed economy and one of the highest per capita incomes globally. Its abundant natural resources and well-developed international trade relations are crucial to the country's econo- my. It ranks highly for quality of life, health, education, economic freedom, civil liberties and political rights. Australia has six federated states: New South Wales , Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, and Western Australia.
SYDNEY, Sydney is the capital city of the state of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia. Sydney is in the top five of the 50 best cities in the world in which to live, work and study, above New York and London. Set around the world’s largest natural harbor, Sydney is home to beautiful golden beaches, world class museums and art galleries, delicious fresh food and a calendar of exciting events and festivals.
CANBERRA: Canberra is the capital city of Australia. Founded following the federation of the colonies of Australia as the seat of government for the new nation, it is Australia's largest inland city, and the eighth-largest Australian city by popula- tion. The city is located at the northern end of the Australian Capital Territory at the northern tip of the Australian Alps, the country's highest mountain range.
As the seat of the Government of Australia, Canberra is home to many important institutions of the federal government, national monuments and museums. These include Parliament House, Government House, the High Court building and the headquarters of numerous government agencies. It is the location of many social and cultural institutions of national significance such as the Australian War Memorial, the Australian National University, the Royal Australian Mint, the Australian Institute of Sport, the National Gallery, the National Museum and the National Library. Canberra has been ranked among the world's best cities to live in and visit.
MELBOURNE: is the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Victoria, and the second most-populous city in Australia, after Sydney. Today, Melbourne is culturally diverse and, among world cities, has the fourth-largest foreign born population. It is a leading financial centre in the Asia-Pacific region, ranking 28th globally in the 2024.
The discovery of gold in Victoria in mid-1851 sparked a gold rush, and Melbourne, the colony's major port, experienced rapid growth. Within months, the city's population had nearly doubled from 25,000 to 40,000 inhabitants. Exponential growth ensued, and by 1865 Melbourne had overtaken Sydney as Australia's most populous city
